BJP-----back to square
6/2/2008 11:49:46 PM
With their mood upbeat as a result of the convincing victory of the party in the Karnataka assembly elections, creating hopes among the party stalwarts that their comeback trail on the national scene, with all the possibilities of forming the government in the Centre, either on its own or with the support of its allies, the BJP has revived its agenda of scraping Article 370 of the Indian constitution, which provides special status to J&K state and a Uniform Civil Code. The BJP and its predecessor Jan Sang whose core agenda was abrogation of Article 370, Uniform Civil Code and anti minorityism, had to keep these priorities in the backburner after coming to power in the Centre in 1998, in order to enlist the support of some parties who were opposed to these demands of the BJP. Since the NDA government led by the BJP was dependent on the crèches of the support of some other parties, most of whom were assertive and perhaps had less stake in continuance of the NDA government put pressure on the party and kept the condition for their support that the BJP would not press for and the NDA government led by it would not enforce these agendas of the party, giving preference to ruling the country than executing its core agenda, the BJP put these issues in the cold storage. Only two things can explain the party reviving these issues before the Lok Sabha elections and giving it to understand that these will form the code planks of the party in the election to the Lok Sabha as well as to some state assemblies being held in the near future. Either the party has the assessment that this time their strength will be much more that it was in the 1998 and 1999 elections and that on the basis of its improved tally, it can disregard the opposition by its likely allies to these issues and can enforce party's writ on them. Alternatively these slogans are only rhetoric and aimed at consolidating the Hindu vote bank, particularly that of the hardcore nationalists and in case the party is not in a position to implement the same as a result of constrains of coalition politics, the same will be again kept in the cold storage. However, after compromising on its ideological plank for the sake of remaining in power, the BJP shall have to work extra hard to convince the people at large about their sincerity over these issues, the plea by the national president of the party, Rajnath Singh for replacing the Hindi version of secularism in the preamble to the constitution of the country, from Dharam Nirpekash to Panth Nirpekash will have many takers, provide the party undertakes a concerted campaign to bring home to the people the real meaning of the connotation of Dharama as a way of life of honesty, human love, universal brotherhood and truthful living while the accurate Hindi version of religion is Panth.
