| J-K seeks land in Noida for exhibiting handicraft | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | June 3 The Jammu and Kashmir government has requested the union government for allocation of land to construct an exhibition hall for promoting handicrafts. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has taken up the matter with the Centre for getting a piece of land at Noida for the hall to increase exports of hand-made articles, state Industries and Commerce Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora said at a function here yesterday. Enumerating the steps to be taken by state government for promotion of handicrafts, Jora said an exhibition would be organised in the United States for exposure of handicraft products. The minister felicitated 15 artisans with cash awards for their outstanding work in sozni work, papier machie, wood carving, chain stitch and basohli paintings, a government spokesman said. The first prize in each category consisted of cash award of Rs 15,000 while the second and third places got Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively, he said. The minister also laid the foundation stone of 'Kashmir Craft Ghar'. The double-storied building, comprising 15 rooms at ground floor and 16 rooms on first floor involves an expenditure of Rs 1.47 crore and will be completed by October this year. Claiming that the state handicraft sector had an annual potential of Rs 2,000 crore, he exhorted upon the artisans to maintain old glory of state's handicrafts and innovate. |
