Terrorist attack: Pakistan is sowing what it has sown in India
6/3/2008 11:33:11 PM

Jammu | June 3
As you sow,so shall you reap is an old adage and the four-year long incidents of violence in Pakistan are a proof to the veracity of the maxim,if at all it was required.Since mid-70's Pakistan used to get sophisticated weapons from the US administration for training and equipping Afghans while they were engaged in a fierce fight against the Soviet troops who had occupied the mountain locked region. However,by late 80's,even after the Soviet troops pulled out of Afghanistan, the Pakistani troops not only siphoned the US weapons and ammunition to terrorists who were being trained on fighting a jehad in Jammu and Kashmir but also equipped these terrorists with the Russian weapons which the Afghans and Pakistani troops had seized from the Soviet troops.
And thus the story of culture of Kalanshkov rifles took roots in Jammu and Kashmir.During the last over 18 years the Pakistan aided militancy in Jammu and Kashmir has taken a toll of over 75,000 people, including over 10,000 security personnel. The number of orphans, widows and destitutes swelled from a few hundred to several thousand in the state since 1989.It was massive destruction of school buildings, vital civilian and security installations, bridges and even forest wealth. The Jehadis did not even spare shrines and religious places.Bomb and grenade attacks became a fashion of the day.Despite strong pleas made by Delhi Islamabad continued to deny its involvement in aiding terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir.Instead it would confirm that it was providing moral and diplomatic support to the ongoing freedom struggle. Those who were in power in Islamabad and the senior functionaries in the Army and the ISI continued to enjoy the death game they had initiated in Jammu and Kashmir.
When Gen.Parvez Musharraf took over as military dictator Pakistan was on the brink of major financial crisis. In order to ensure recovery from the economic collapse it supported the American operations against the Talibans and the men of Al Qaeda.in Afghanistan.Pakistan allowed its soil to be used as bases for the American troops' operations against the Afghan rebels. It was simply a cosmetic cooperation because Islamabad had to keep the cauldron of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir boiling. And when Gen.Musharraf found going tough for his Government he readily responded to the peace initiatives from Delhi. He played his political cards better than his predecessors in the sense that he won the goodwill of the United States and tried to defuse the level of conflict with India despite his official agencies' moral and material support to militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir. With the installation of a civilian Government one had expected peace to descend on Pakistan. But it has not happened and since February last scores of people and security personnel have been killed and several hundred wounded in bomb explosions and armed attacks.
The Monday's suicide attack outside the Danish embassy left eight killed and 30 wounded.Even the window panes of Indian high commissioner's residence were smashed.Experts believe that the attack by the suicide bomber was the outcome of anger against blasphemous cartoons having been published in the Danish media.Whatever may have been the provocation terrorism has taken roots in Pakistan which manifest itself in the shape of Shia-Sunni conflict, bomb and gun attacks on mosques and on those who had visited them for prayers. On March 15 a similar attack was carried out on an Italian restaurant frequented by foreigners in which two foreigners were klled and 10 others were wounded.Such attacks have been witnessed in other provinces of Pakistan, including Karachi. These terrorist strikes take place despite the civilian regime trying to buy peace with the Jehadist groups in the North-Western Frontier Province and the tribal belt of Pakistan.
Peace will contine to elude Pakistan as much as it is the case with India unless the two cooperate and pool their resources for launching a joint anti-terrorist operations.India is willing to join hands with Pakistan provided Islamabad took steps to check infiltration of militants into Jammu and Kashmir.Possibilities for such a situation to emerge are bleak because Islamabad, despite ongoing bloodshed, has not changed its mindset. It continues to harp on the Kashmir issue. During series of Delhi-Islamabad talks in the last four years Pakistan has simply tried to highlight the importance of settling the Kashmir issue thereby creating hurdles in solving other bilateral problem.Let Pakistan understand the gravity of the situation that is developing on its soil and shake hands with India for launching a war against terrorists.
