| Commission orders Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | June 4 The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission on Wednesday recommended ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of three people allegedly tortured to death in Gandoh of Doda district by Army personnel eight years ago. SHRC acting chairman Habibullah Bhat also recommended filing of cases against the accused Armymen. According to a complaint filed by Naveeda Begum, Fatima Begum and Sheema, their husbands Abdul Majid, Abdul Rashid and Mohammed Amin died following severe torture. Armymen from 5 Sikh Light Infantry had summoned them for questioning at a camp in Tendla village on January 22, 2000. Thirteen others were seriously injured. The post-mortems concluded that the three died due to injuries caused by a blunt object. Later, a magisterial inquiry held Armymen including Captain Vineet guilty. Bhat asked the government to pay Rs 2 lakh each as ex-gratia relief including Rs 1 lakh that has already been given to relatives of the victims. He also recommended a payment of Rs 75,000 to each of the injured. |
