Kerela upset J&K, title holders Punjab lose to Services

SRINAGAR | June 5

Jammu and Kashmir lost their opening quarterfinals league tie to Kerela while Services upset defending champions, Punjab in other league match of group-A in the J&K Bank 62nd National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy at Bakshi Stadium, here today.
Witnessed by a huge crowd of more than 20,000 football lovers, the tie between J&K and Kerela generated great enthusiasm among the local crowd. But the loss to hosts to Kerela (1-2) left the crowd dejected. In fact, the Kerala boys look more focused in their game plans than J&K.
In the very opening moments J&K missed couple of chances before Kerala’s Abdul Noushad beat the defense of J&K to score in the 12th minute. Three minutes before the half time, Asif gave a sharp pass to Ishfaq, who scored the equalizer to provide much confidence of 1-1 draw to the team at half time.
With the start of second half, Kerala team strengthened its defense to tackle the effective striker of J&K, Ishaq Ahmad. Two free-kicks just out side ‘D’ were nicely tackled as Ishfaq was blocked near ‘D’.
Kerela managed the lead after Abdul Noushad scored on a counter attack in the 6th minute of the second half followed by Asif Saheer in the 30th minute breaking the defense of J&K. The host team had many miss passes after the drinks and could not hold the ball till the final whistle blew in favour of Kerala with score 3-1.
The second match between defending champions Punjab and Services too attracted a huge crowd. Services played exceptional throughout and unexpectedly dominate over the Punjab mid-field to win the game by two goals to one.
International footballer and start striker of Services, S. Raleng scored first goal for in the 8th minute of first half and the lead was doubled in the 27th minute by Lal Ruatafela on a beautiful ball-play by the midfielders to end the first half 2-0.
It was only in the 11the minute of second half, when Harvinder Singh first time managed to beat the strong defense line of Services team to score a goal for Punjab. The match was officiated by P.K.Bose in the centre assisted by JP Pandit and Gokulanad on the lines.
