9/25/2019 10:04:36 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 25: The flight operations will not be suspended for two weeks as announced earlier at Jammu Airport to facilitate its expansion and early start of night landing service with international flights.
The flights operation at Jammu Airport was scheduled to be suspended for two weeks from October 1 in view of expansion of the runway as currently the airport does not have night landing service due to the lack of proper infrastructure, including the required length of the runway.
"The flights operation will not be suspended from October 1 because the government did not agree to the proposal as Jammu airport is one of the busiest ones," official sources here said.
They said that the regular flights will operate as usual, adding, "only some of the flights will be rescheduled and talks with the operators are on."
"The flights operation will continue from morning till 1500 hours," sources added and said that the work on runway expansion will take place during night hours.
"No flight will take off or land after 1500 hours," they added and said that the runway expansion is one of the major requisites for upgrading Jammu airport to international level and added, "as it was finally decided not to suspend the operation but at the same time, expansion of the runway was mandatory, finally, the work will be held during night hours." "The expansion work of the airport is in full swing while the runway is also being expanded," a senior official of the Airport Authority of India told here. They said that all flights to Srinagar either domestic or international will operate accordingly as per their schedule.
Station Director, Jammu Airport, AAI, Dr Pravat Ranjan here told , "we have followed to the notice served to us and accordingly, flights operation will not be suspended but instead, work on runway expansion will be done during the night time."
Including Air India, flights of around 25 aviation companies, operate daily from Jammu including Go Air, Spicejet, Vistara, Indigo, Go India and many other flights are operational.
However, official sources said that the process of cutting of trees inside the airport, expansion and repair work at the land owned by the AAI is in progress.
"The land was transferred to the AAI in August 2018 and its expansion vis-a-vis runway is must keeping in view the security of the airport," they said. An official further said that presently the operational runway is 6,700 feet long and it is further being extended to 8,000 feet (1300 feet expansion) for night landing, adding, "day to day deliberations are also going on between the divisional administration, Indian Air Force authorities and the Airport Authorities regarding the expansion."
Meanwhile, official sources said the process for expanding the existing runway from 6,700 feet to 8,000 feet on 18 side to facilitate operations of aircraft with load penalty, will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore.
Airport Authority of India has expanded modified and upgraded the terminal building of Jammu Airport with enhanced passenger amenities, including doubling the area and per hour passenger handling capacity.
Earlier, the area of building was increased earlier from 6,750 sqm to 14,500 sqm with increased numbers of escalators and lifts while three aerobridges with additional taxing track were also commissioned.
Jammu Airport had 1.6 million passengers in FY17 and now the airport handles 50 aircraft movements.
