| PDP sounds poll siren, panel to screen candidates | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 7 A day after Mehbooba Mufti was re-elected as president of the Peoples Democratic Party for the third time in row, the party has set in motion the process for selection of candidates for upcoming assembly elections. PDP is first among main political parties –other being Congress and National Conference –to formally initiate the process for identifying the candidates. Mehbooba has has appointed a six member committee to recommend candidates for the ensuing elections to the State Assembly. The Committee headed by the PDP senior leader and Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beig will include Moulana Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, Tariq Hameed Karra, Mohammad Dilawar Mir, Sardar Rangil Singh and Ved Mahajan. The committee has been advised to start the process of selection immediately and recommend the list to the party President for approval. It may mentioned here that in the meeting of its Political Affairs Committee held on May 17, the PDP had decided that mechanism to identify the assembly election candidates will be set in a motion within a period of one months. The PDP has claimed to have resolved to give mandate only to those people who were inspired by the vision and objectives of PDP relating to resolution of Kashmir problem, restoration of peace and achievement of economic development. PAC further observed that participation in electoral process is the most efficacious method for the people to have a governance of their choice and a dispensation that will be committed to serve them. In its last PAC meeting, the has also observed with satisfaction that despite many hurdles and hiccups alliance between PDP and Congress has worked fairly well during the last five and half years. Occasionally, there have been aberrations and opposition to the alliance from vested interests but the understanding between PDP and Congress leadership which is embodied in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) has survived. “Consistent with its own declared policies and programmes PAC would hope that this alliance would continue in future also for the resolution of the Kashmir problem, restoration of peace and development of all the regions in the state. PAC, however, noted that success in this regard will depend on the cooperation and understanding from both the sides”, the meeting had concluded signaling possibility of alliance with the Congress. |
