Premini Sinha inaugurates Police- Public Mela
Mela witnesses heavy rush of visitors

A one-day Police Public Mela organized by Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association (JKPWWA) was inaugurated here this morning at Sher- i- Kashmir Cricket Stadium Sonawar, by Premini Sinha, amidst clapping and songs by small school kids.
The Mela began with lighting of the traditional lamp by Sinha.
Director General Police, Kuldeep Khoda, Chairperson, J&K Police Wives Welfare Association, Dr. Indu Khoda, members of association, senior police officers and large numbers of civilians were present on the occasion.
On her arrival she was received by Minister for Health and Medical Education Mangat Ram Sharma, Minister of State for Health and Medical Education Peer Mohammad Hussain, Director General of Polic Kuldeep Khoda, Chairperson J&K Wives Welfare Association Dr. Indu Khoda, members of Welfare Association and other top ranking police officers.
While interacting with media persons Premini Sinha described the Mela a sincere effort of Jammu and Kashmir Police Organization to reach out to the people for keeping up and promoting the people friendly image of the police. Appreciating the role of JKPWWA for taking several measures for the welfare of police personnel and their families, she said by organizing such Melas new dimensions were added by the department to its welfare schemes during last few years.
After inaugurating the Mela, Premini Sinha, Chairperson JKPWWA, Dr. Indu Khoda, senior police officers and other functionaries of the welfare association went around a large number of stalls put up in the Mela and evinced keen interest in the products kept in the stalls by various police welfare establishments from all the three regions of the state, private concerns and some voluntary organizations. They also interacted with the stall holders, police personnel and their families and enquired about their well being.
During the day, thousands of people from all over the valley thronged the Sher- i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, to have fun and participated in the day long Mela and brick sale of different items kept for sale by stall holders. The visitors demanded for extending the mela to three days and also suggested for making it a three-day Mela in future. People also enjoyed the different cultural items presented by police personnel and other cultural parties.
Talking to media persons on the occasion, the DGP said that the objective of holding such meals is to generate resources for implementing various welfare schemes for police personnel and their families, besides providing free medical cover, interest free loans, premium for group insurance schemes, meritorious scholarships, special rewards to the brilliant wards of the police personnel and supporting orphans and widows of the police personnel who have made supreme sacrifices for the integrity of the country.
Khoda said that comradeship exhibited by the officers and jawans of Jammu and Kashmir Police for theirs fellow personnel particularly during the past few years has been commendable and the organization is more a family than just a government department. He said holding of such event is of great significance. The mela has emerged as one of the favorite attraction for the last seven years with people avidly waiting for the grand event, he said.
Earlier, Chairperson, JKPWWA, Dr. Indu Khoda briefed the visiting dignitaries about the objectives of organizing the Mela and said that sale proceeds realized from the selling of various items kept in different stalls would be utilized for the welfare of police personnel and their families with special attention on the martyrs, widows.
She said to make the Mela more attractive for general public who had shown keen interest in the participation in previous meals since last several years, the association has decided this time to enhance the total number of prizes from 2, 352 to 3, 353.
The main attraction of the Mela were raffle draw, stalls of Kashmiri embroidery, jewelry, cosmetics, Chinese furniture, Ladakhi carpets, phulkari work, walnut and willow furniture, stationery and books, tambola, kitchen ware, rides and jhulls, lucky dip, cold drinks, vegetarian and non-vegetarian eatables, magic show and various entrainment programs.
The star attraction of the mega event was 1st prize (Scorpio), 2nd prize (Maruti Desire), 3rd prize (three Maruti-800), 4th prize (seven Motor Cycles), 5th prize (five Computer Laptops), 6th prize (five Computer Desktops), 7th prize (ten Sony Handicam Cameras), 8th prize (ten Mobile Sets Nokia), 9th prize (five Color TV 21’), 10th prize (five Color T.V. 14’), 11th prize (Rs. 500 each for 300 ticket holders) and 12th prize (Rs. 100 each for 3000 tickets holders).
