| ‘Angioplasty effective, safer treatment for heart attacks’: Dr. Bali | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | June 8 Asserting that angioplasty is more effective and safer treatment for heart attacks of any degree, Dr Harinder K Bali, renowned Cardiologist and Director Cardiology Fortis hospital Mohali, has said that the world wide experience indicates that early angioplasty is the most effective method of opening blocked coronary arteries. He was interacting with the media persons ahead of a Cardiology camp being organized at Purkoo near here today. He said while more people in their forties are getting affected by heart attack, Dr. Bali stressed that even younger people in their 30’s with cardiac risk factors should get periodic preventive cardiac check up. The investigations, he said, should include blood cholesterol, blood sugar, tread mill test and echocardiography. Dr. Bali clarified although angioplasty is the superior and safer method of treating patients with heart attack but unfortunately enough cardiac cath labs and experienced operators are not available in Jammu and Kashmir at present. With the non availability of such facilities and manpower, clot busters is the only widely available method of promptly treating these patients, he added. He said that in majority of the patients it is not possible to know whether blood supply has been restored after thrmbolytic treatment adding that clinical indicators of success of this treatment are not reliable. In such patients where thrmbolytic treatment is not effective in opening the arteries, large heart muscle gets damaged, he added. He said such patients are prone to get serious complications during the hospitalization or may be left with severe heart muscle damage and emphasized the need for close coordination between tertiary care centers like Fortis hospital and a local hospital/ nursing homes/ primary health centres where heart attack patients are first seen. Dr. Bali spelt out major symptoms and risk factors for heart attacks and said that people with family history of heart diseases are more prone to developing heart attack at early age. He said besides other known cardiac risk factors, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, stressful and sedentary life is contributing in a major way to the increasing rate of heart attacks. ‘A major change in life style and aggressive persistent control of risk factors can reverse this trend’, Dr Bali asserted . |
