| Yet another bombshell by Nawaz Sharif | | Drug smuggling to shore up Pak economy | | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, July 8: Yet another bombshell by Gen. Parvez Musharraf's bete noire, Nawaz Sharif: One of the top generals of the PakistanArmy had sugested drug smuggling to improve Pakistan's economy. Making the sensational revelation in his biography, former Premier of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif said: "However, I had snubbed the general and rejected the proposal". The biography is titled "Who Is The Traitor? Nawaz Sharif's Story In His Own Words". The biography is written by Suhail Warraich, a senior journalist.
In a chapter on the role of the intelligence agencies in Pakistan, Sharif says: "While in the rest of the world one cannot imagine operations being carried out by intelligence agencies without the permission of the government, in Pakistan they happen. ... For example, during my regime, two senior Army generals came to see me. When the meeting started, one of them said: 'In order to make the economic condition of the country better, drugs should be allowed to be smuggled to other countries under the government's supervision'." Nawaz Sharif adds: "I was amazed to hear this proposal and said sternly to the general: 'Is that you who is saying this?' The general was embarrassed and said: 'It is only a suggestion'. "The other general spoke up: 'All the developed countries have progressed with the help of black money. Be it England or Switzerland, they all became rich with their black money. America has plundered the riches of other countries. We should also make use of this opportunity and make our country prosperous.' I strictly rejected their suggestions." Sharif further states: "The ISI in Pakistan does nothing but politics. It has abandoned its real task and is wasting its energies on forming and dislodging the political parties and the governments.
Nawaz Sharif has regretted: "The ISI also plays an important role in changing the loyalties of the politicians while the other business of the ISI includes rigging elections and blackmailing the Assembly". His warning: "Until the role of the ISI in politics is not brought to an end, the political system of Pakistan can't be either developed or strengthened. The only way to bring an end to the role of ISI is to change its charter." ==============
