| CPI(M) to contest a dozen seats in ensuing assembly elections | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 9 The CPI(M) has decided to contest 10 to 12 seats during the ensuing Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the CPI(M) leader and MLA, M. Y. Tarigami, "we have not taken any final decision because we are awaiting the birth of the third front." He today said "we may field party in not more than two constituencies in the Jammu region and the remaining eight to 10 seats would be contested in south Kashmir. "Asked whether the CPI(M) would enter into an electoral alliance with any other organization Tarigami said that "we have not decided anything about it because if we have to forge a pre-poll alliance with any other organization it will be with those joining the third front." The CPI(M) had contested seven seats in 2002 and had won two. The party had secured 0.88 per cent of the total polled votes in these seven constituencies, out of which one was in Jammu. In reply to a question he said that the CPI(M) had shown better performance than the BJP in the last election. Explaining it, he said the BJP had contested 58 seats and had bagged only one with a poll percentage of 8.57. Asked what is the reason for deciding to contest more seats than it did in 2002 Tarigami said that he and his party colleagues had worked hard all these five and a half years and have been able to strengthen its base in south Kashmir. He stated that "we are not in favour contesting the election for the purpose of registering our presence. We will field candidates only in areas of our influence and not follow those who either secured one seat or drew blank in the 2002 poll which have decided to contest all the 87 seat.", Tarigami said. |
