| Army organized 'Cross Country 2008' at Uri | | | Early Times Reporter Uri | June 10 A Cross Country road race was organized by army's 53 GR of 19 infantry Dagger Division at Uri in which hundreds of students of various age groups participated. The distance of this road race was categorized according to age group of participants, for under 14, under 16, and above 18 it was 6, 8 and 10 kilometers distance respectively. c In the morning hours, the road race was flagged off by Commander Uri Brigade, Brigadier Ninder Pal Singh Hira.
Taking over the each other at different race points and jostling in the run way at finish point, students who participated in this road race where overwhelmed by the opportunity provided to them by army in this frontier township. Speaking to the gathering of sports lovers, students, and prominent citizens, Commander Uri Brigade, Brigadier Ninder Pal Singh Hira, said that such type of sports events not only makes the person physically agile and alert but also help in mental growth of our youth owing to the inculcation of brotherhood and sense of harmony and cooperation. He added that race was aimed at to bridge the gap between army and Awam (people) public and to utilize the energy of youth towards constructive activities like sports. Commanding Officer 53 G R Colonel Runpinder Singh said that there is no dearth of talent in frontier areas and the talent is here exceptional one but the need was to polish their capabilities to enable them to compete at national and international level. Adding he said that providing such kind of sports activities would not only encourage the participation of the youth in sports activities but also help in boosting the sports in the valley. He said that the sports activities are very vital in development of the overall personality of youth, and by encouraging such events would go long way in polishing the talent of youth in general and rural in particular. Iftikhar Ahmmed Lone of Uri, Adil Zamani Abbassi of Arusa, and Fayaz Ahmed of Dardkot begged first, second and third position respectively. People of the areas, sports lovers and the participants hailed the army efforts for organizing such events. "We are highly thankful to army which has been for organizing sports events in this frontier Teshil as the children here find least opportunity to participate in such events." |
