| EPTWS demands ownership rights on EP | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 10 Evacuees property tenants welfare society (EPTWS) Jammu has demanded conferring rights to evacuee property. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of its president Banarsi Das Angral and was attended among others by Krishan Lal Gupta, Nazir Ahmed, Suraj Ram Sharma, Ramesh Sharma and Ramesh Sawhney who expressed anguish over dilly dallying on the part of the state government in resolving the issue of ownership rights to the tenants of the evacuee property, both in rural and urban areas. As per press release, authorities in the evacuee property department have been unnecessarily harassing the tenants, by demanding a sum of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 80,000 for granting permission to them to construct an additional room at their own cost in the buildings under their possession. Similarly they are demanding heavy fees per square foot for transfer of tenancy even in the case of legal heirs of expired tenants of the ageing ones. The association contacted that on the pattern of conferring of ownership rights on the occupants of government lands through encroachments or under proper lease, the government should transfer the proprietary rights under the occupants of evacuee property both in rural and urban areas on hire purchase bases, after deducting the amount already paid by them as rent. The senior advocates S S Lehar and D S Chuhan, specially invite to the meeting for giving their legal opinion, told that there was no legal hitch for the government in doing so. Under the evacuee property act, the original owners of the property in its time existing form, who have since acquired citizenship of Pakistan, cannot acquire Indian citizenship and hence cannot stake claim to the property left back by them over 60 years ago. |
