| Pak intelligence agencies continue supporting Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, as ISI active to revive pro Khalistan militancy besides actively helping Kashmir militancy | | | Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | June 11 News Analysis On the heel of Indian intelligence agencies reporting, on the bases of authentic inputs, that ISI of Pakistan and some elements in the armed forces of that country continue to be extending support to the terrorists operating from that country against India and terrorist training camps are still intact there, a report published by a US think tank has claimed that Pakistani intelligent agents and paramilitary forces have helped train Taliban insurgents and have given them information about American troops movement in Afghanistan. While the sources at the high level in the Indian security forces have warned against any complacency and let up in our preparedness and alertness to thwart the game plan of ISI of Pakistan and some elements in the armed forces and the government in that country, friendly to the Islamic Jehadis, who continue to be extending moral as well as material support, including armed training and supply of sophisticated arms to the militants operating in Kashmir, pro Khalistan militancy in Punjab is also sought to be revived, the study published on Monday by the RAND Corp, funded by the US defense department says that there are militant sanctuaries in Pakistani territory, bordering Afghanistan. It warned that US will face crippling long term consequences in Afghanistan, if Taliban sanctuaries in Pakistan are not eliminated. The report echoes the recent statements by American generals, who have increased their warnings that militants safe havens in Pakistan are threatening US efforts in Afghanistan. "Every successful insurgency in Afghanistan since 1979 enjoyed safe haven in neighbouring countries and the current insurgency is no different", said the report's author Seth Johes. "Right now the Talibans and other groups are getting help from individuals within Pakistan's government and until that ends, the region's long term security is in jeopardy". The study, "Counter insurgency in Afghanistan", found some active and former officials in Pakistan's intelligence service and the Frontier Corps---a Pakistani paramilitary force deployed along the Afghan border—providing direct assistance to Taliban militants and helping secure medical care for wounded fighters. It said NATO officials have uncovered several instances of Pakistani intelligence agents providing information to Taliban fighters, even tipping off them about the location and movement of Afghan and coalition forces which undermined several US and NATO anti Taliban military operations. The report further said that Pakistan's intelligence service and other government agencies provided Taliban and other insurgents with training at camps in Pakistan, as well as intelligence, financial and arms assistance and help crossing the border.
Some recent events, hinting at some sort of active collaboration between the Kashmiri militants and fresh attempts for revival of pro Khalistan militancy in Punjab and some other parts of the country, have sounded alarming signals to the country's security forces. There are intelligence inputs that ISI of Pakistan continues to be providing moral, material and financial assistance as well as logistic support to these militants. The arrest recently of two pro Khalistan militants, near Kahana Chak along Jammu—Akhnoor road, smuggling weapons from across the border, for handing over the same to the Sikh extremists for eliminating Baba Ram Rahim Singh, the head of Saucha Sodha Set in Punjab, is ominous in this regard. Besides attempts at reviving pro Khalistan militancy, moves are afoot to form a joint platform of over ground Kashmiri secessionists and Sikh extremists in Punjab by roping in some anti national elements among Christians are the alarming developments. Twenty forth anniversary of operational Blue Star, held in Amritsar recently witnessed the participation of some pro secessionist elements from Kashmir, who tried to raise common concern over alleged atrocities on the minorities in India. The hardcore Kashmiri secessionist and Islamic fundamentalist, leader Sayeed Ali Shaw Geelani who too was invited to address the gathering in connection with the observance of blue star operation, in Amritsar, was not allowed by the authorities in J&K to go there, as he was confined to house arrest in Srinagar. A staunch supporter and close relative of his, Iftkhar Geelani, who participated in the program arranged for telephonic address by Geelani to the congregation in Amritsar, in which Geelani blew hot and cold and spit venom against India. |
