SRINAGAR, Oct 26: On a day when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is celebrating 'Accession Day' of Jammu and Kashmir with the Union of India, party general secretary Ram Madhav said this Diwali is special for the people of the state after "complete integration" of the state with India.
"This Diwali is special for people of Jammu & Kashmir as it is first Diwali after complete integration of the state with India. We're no more a victim of dual citizenship. We all are citizens of India. We'll celebrate Diwali with this pride," Madhav said while addressing a BJP event on the 'Accession Day'.
Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh units of the party marked the day with celebrations across the region.
Madhav on Saturday said the objective that Maharaja Hari Singh held while signing the instrument of accession was realised with the government's abrogation of Article 370 which granted special status to the northern state.
"On 26 Oct, 1947, J&K acceded to dominion of India, anniversary of which is observed every year but this year is different. The objective with which Maharaja Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession, the vision behind his step has been realised with the abrogation of Article 370," Madhav said.
The Centre on August 5 scrapped special status of the state and enacted the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019, splitting the state into two Union Territories. The government also imposed Section 144 of CrPc -prohibiting public gathering, put all the politicians under house arrest and snapped communication lines to prevent violence in the state.
The government has removed most of the restrictions including Section 144, restored post-paid mobile connections as it claims that normalcy has been restored in the state. Human rights groups claim otherwise.
