MBA student, beau held guilty in poisoning case
6/12/2008 11:30:58 PM
Pune | June 12
The infamous case of a woman and her fiancé, both MBA students, killing a fellow student by offering him ‘prasad’ laced with poison last year drew to a close with the district and sessions court here pronouncing the couple guilty on Wednesday. The quantum of punishment will be decided on Thursday.
The woman, Aditi Sharma (25), of Jammu, her fiancé, Pravin Khandelwal (25), of Jaipur, and the deceased, Udit Ashwinikumar Bharati (25), of Jammu, were first-year management students at a Wakad-based institute.
Aditi and Udit had fallen in love while studying at an engineering college in Jammu and had decided to get married with the consent of their parents. However, they decided to tie the knot only after pursing their MBA, for which they relocated to Pune.
While Aditi stayed in the ladies’ hostel of the institute, Udit shared a flat with his friends.
While pursuing the course, Aditi fell in love with Pravin. She now wanted to distance herself from Udit and issued several threats to him, which a perplexed Udit reported to his parents. Udit also changed his cell phone number but Aditi and Pravin allegedly managed to get it from Udit’s house in Jammu and started harassing him.
How student, beau executed murder on April 23 last year, Aditi called Udit to Chinchwad. They first met at a lodge and later decided to go to a restaurant near the railway station. Pravin was allegedly present in the restaurant. There, Aditi told Udit that she and her friends had gone to Shirdi and had brought ‘prasad’ for him.
However, no sooner had Udit had eaten the ‘prasad’ than he started vomiting. He was rushed to a private hospital at Thergaon where he breathed his last.
The police had first registered the incident as a case of accidental death. However, a case under section 302 (punishment for murder) was registered by the police after Udit’s father lodged a complaint against Aditi and Pravin after receiving the forensic reports which stated that his son had died of arsenic poisoning.
A police team headed by deputy commissioner of police (zone III) Chandrashekhar Daithankar and inspector Rajendra Bhamre had gone to Jammu and detained Aditi and Pravin, who later confessed that they had poisoned Udit. They were handed over to the Hinjewadi police for further investigations.
Additional sessions judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi said she would pronounce the quantum of punishment on Thursday to enable additional public prosecutor Neelima Vartak and defence lawyer Vijayrao Mohite to argue on the point of punishment.
