| Manmohan Singh kyun dukhi hain | | | The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a sad man today. Reason- the Economist, Dr. Singh, the pioneer of economic reforms in India, is forced to surrender before and give goodbye to his agenda of economic reforms, as Prime Minister of the country, under compulsions of political situation. The Congress led UPA government, the major constituent of which is committed to economic reforms initiated by Narsimha Rao led Congress government, with Manmohan as the point man of reforms as the Finance Minister in Narsimha Rao government, is being dictated terms by its allies, either DMK, which is past of the coalition government or Left parties who support the government from outside. Further some of the Congress ministers in the Congress led government and party leaders too are opposing the reforms and trying to put impediments in the way. At least they plead slow going on the process, with a view to placate the Leftist allies and not to lose the vote bank of working classes, before whom economic reforms are presented as against their interest. Forced to rollback the disinvestment decision with his own party watching from the sidelines, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has let his displeasure known to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other leaders forcing the party to officially dismiss speculation that he may quit. Rejecting rumours right through the day that the PM, in an enough-is-enough outburst, had threatened to quit, an aide of the PM and Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan called it "undiluted rumour-mongering." However, Singh's unhappiness over being forced to rollback the decision on disinvestment in NALCO and NLC, a decision to which the Congress and the DMK had been party, has been confirmed by several sources in the party and government. "The PM is unhappy and frustrated," a senior Cabinet member said. The challenge before him is to make necessary compromises and run the government, a party functionary said. These issues came up in the core committee of the Congress, including Sonia Gandhi, which met for nearly two hours at the PM's residence. There was no official word from the party about the meeting-Pranab Mukherjee called it routine-but a senior functionary said disinvestment and the AIIMS row were part of the discussions. At the meeting, the PM is said to have argued that funding for social sector schemes and projects depends on disinvestment proceeds. The BJP led NDA government which had followed the agenda of economic reforms initiated by Rao government has now got the handle to dub Manmohan Singh as the weak Prime Minister. However, Dr. Singh's position today is no better than that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who as Prime Minister of NDA led government was forced to several of his decisions and even go against his wishes, under pressure from allies on one hand and from his own Sangh parivaar outfits on the other.
