| Barring Congress, other mainstream parties begun short listing process | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 13 Barring Congress all other mainstream political parties have started the exercise of short listing their candidates to be fielded in different constituencies during the ensuing Assembly poll. While the Panthers Party which plans to contest over 50 seats, has tentatively selected 25 candidates, the BSP has cleared the names of 40 candidates while it was preparing another list. The PDP has set up a panel for selecting party candidates whose names would be cleared by the Parliamentary Board. The poll panel has been assigned the task of short listing the candidates after screening the applicants. The National Conference leadership too has begun the process of short listing candidates for contesting the election. The BJP has asked district units to submit list of candidates who could be screened by the apex body for party mandate. Other smaller organizations too have initiated the process of selecting candidates. The Congress is yet to carry out the process. Spokesman of the Congress said that first of all list of prospective candidates would be received from the district units. These lists would be screened by the PCC's parliamentary Board. Finally it would be submitted the party high command which has the power to clear the names of the candidates. The spokesman said that "we are not in a hurry. We simply want to intensify our pre-poll campaign and the Chief Minister had drawn up a programme for visiting various places including the far flung areas for mustering voters support for the Congress”. He said that the Congress is an old party having roots in all the three regions and hence it will not face any problem in the selection of candidates. Indications are that each party will first of all field all those candidates who had won the 2002 poll. The second category would include those who had been number two as far securing poll percentage in the previous election. The Congress, the PDP and the National Conference may field some MLCs in the ensuing election, the reports suggest. |
