| CM to dedicate much awaited Bhoria filtration Plant to Jammuites today | | Thousands of farmers at receiving end | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 13 The people of Jammu city would soon get 'respite' from the scarcity of drinking water as Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad will inaugurate the much awaited Bhoria Filtration Plant here tomorrow. Sources in the Public Health Engineering Department said that the inhabitants of Channi, Narwal, Bhatandi and Sainik colony will get un-interrupted water supply after the inauguration of the Bhoria filtration plant. However, sources said that with commissioning of the Bhoria Filtration Plant, thousands of farmers would come on roads as their standing crops on 250 hectares of land can be damaged, The tapping of water by the PHE department from the canal would affect about 250 hectares of land as the water could not reach to tail end, sources claimed. "See if the PHE department continuously taps the water from Rawi Tawi canal the farmers would suffer as their agriculture land could not be irrigated" a Retired Engineer of Rawi Tawi said adding they (PHE) should have first constructed the intake house. He said I too have some experience of the department and the filtration plant in the long run would not run. Though the filtration plant has no source tapping water, the intake house adjacent to the filtration plant is under construction and is likely to be completed with in the period of six months. Presently water is being tapped from Rawi-Tawi canal under an agreement between the PHE and Rawi Tawi Department. "Both the departments have undergone an agreement till the filtration plant is inaugurated tomorrow" sources said. It is reliably learnt that the work on this project was started some where in 2002 with the estimated cost of rupees one crore which was later increased to Rs. 2.15 lakhs. The project work has so far been inaugurated three times by different PHE Ministers; However, sources said, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad managed to arrange the final commissioning of the filtration Plant well before the election notification likely to be issued next month. "The project was started in the year 2002 with an estimated cost of rupees one crore and later it was escalated by Rs 1.15 lakhs" Executive Engineer PHE division-II said adding with the commissioning of the filtration plant majority of the areas notified under the scheme would be benefited. He however said that the areas would be covered completely when the filtration plant has its own intake house which is presently under construction. "The filtration plant has capacity of 1.8 mgd/day and will augment the areas like Narwal, Channi, Sanik Colony and Bahu Fort" he claimed. But experts claim that there is no source where from the department can get water and the claim of constructing the intake house are seems to be making crystals in air. The department of Rawi Tawi has reportedly decided not to undergo any further agreement with the PHE as they may face acute shortage of water ahead of crop season. When contacted Executive Engineer Rawi Tawi Canal told News Agency of Kashmir that the agreement was up to May 2008 or till the project is inaugurated. He said with tapping of water by the PHE department from the canal would affect about 250 hectares of land as the water could not reach to tail end. We have taken up the matter with government and the PHE department has to go for some other alternative other wise farmer community would come on roads. |
