Sarrori presides over forest officers’ meet

A high level meeting chaired by minister for state for environment and forests, G M Saroori was held here today. The meeting was attended by Jigmet Tapka, regional wild life wasren, Roop Avtar Kour, Divisional Forest Officer Leh, Anagchok, district soil conservation officer, G M Sheikh, Ladakh development organization, representative from Leh nutrition project, TA TA Gyurja Project, women alliance, Skarchan and Mohd. Ali, Range officer, Leh.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister highlighted the importance of affforestation works in Ladakh region. He stressed that about forty years back there was hardly any plantation forestry in Ladakh while now the area looks quite green. There has been the result of continuous endeavor of the forest department that more and more area has been brought under affforestation. He emphasized that a project proposal needs to be submitted to the government for under taking large scale affforestation works in the area with active involvement of communities and the local NGOs.
Divisional Forest Officer explained to the minister that every year affforestation works are being carried out under the district plan but due to scarcity of water, there is a limitation top extending plantation activity to vacant lands. District soil conservation officer suggested that if the government provides subsidy for digging of bore wells to farmers, they would be encouraged to take up plantation activity on a massive scale on their own private lands. The minister assured that the matter would be taken up with the higher authorities and consequently more area would be available for plantation.
DFO, also explained to the minister that out of 45,000 sq.km area of the district, only 29 sq.km is forest land.
She also explained that the project on the conservation of sea buck thorn has already been sanctioned by the national medical plant board, New Delhi and is under execution. Another project of NMBD regarding conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants is also under implementation.
The minister on the occasion inquired from regional wild life warden about the activities of wild life department. Jigmet Tapka explained about the different faunal species in existence in Ladakh and also the different sanctuaries and their significance. He also explained about various projects being under taken by the wild life department.
