| Transport strike brought forth discrimination against Jammu | | | During four days of strike by the private commercial transports people in Srinagar and other towns of the valley were taken by surprise as the J&K State Road Transportation Corporation buses, which in normal time are conspicuous by their absence, started plying suddenly on different routes. These buses did serve the purpose to some extent, though these could not fully substitute for the private transport that went off the road. But the question arises where these fleets of buses go in normal times. It is ironical that J&K SRTC buses are known to be running regular passenger service on interstate routes as from Jammu to Delhi, Jaipur and even from one station to another in other parts of the country, but they remain absent on the routes within the state. The J&K SRTC is in red since long which could not only make it a viable PSU but also help the people enjoy cheap and comfortable transport service. The government has rather chosen to leave the field open to the private transporters and in the absence of any competition, the commuters are fleeced and left bleeding. Another moot quest is that while during the strike period fleet of SRTC buses came on the roads within Srinagar city as well as on various routes in Kashmir valley. Neither in Jammu city nor on Jammu-Katra route any SRTC buses were plied to mitigate the sufferings of a large number of stranded passengers, who could not reach katra from Jammu or back after paying obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. However the SRTC buses remained plying on interstate routes, from Jammu to various other towns in the country. In mitigating the hardships of the people in times of any crisis, the government betrays callousness in general, but this apathetic attitude of the government towards the sufferings of the people in Jammu region is more pronounced than in Kashmir valley, as is evident in discriminatory treatment meted out to the stranded passenger in Jammu. In fact there was more need for plying JKSRTC buses in Jammu, particularly the Jammu and Katra to overcome the inconvenience and hardship being faced by the pilgrims in large numbers, forced to spend nights together on the Jammu Bus stand, Railway station and some other places. Further the callousness of the government in mitigating the sufferings of the passenger is betrayed by their failure to mobilize all modes of transport at their disposal including mini buses, tata sumos and other vehicles with various government departments and many remaining in the state garages. In fact the government failed to solve the problem on war footing and the sufferings of people were taken casually.
