Highways connecting Kashmir with Ladakh, Jammu closed
11/15/2019 6:32:53 PM

Srinagar, Nov 15
The national highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed yet again on Thursday night due to fresh landslides triggered by rain.

Meanwhile, the 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed for the tenth day on Friday due to snowfall. The road is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch.

The national highway, linking Ladakh with Kashmir, also remained closed for the second consecutive day on Friday due to fresh snowfall during the past 24 hours.

A traffic police official told UNI this morning traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended last night due to another huge landslide at Digdol in Ramban area. However, due to continued shooting stone, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) could not undertake the landslide clearance operation during the night.

Landslide and shooting stone clearance operation was started only this morning, he said, adding it will take some hours before allowing traffic on the highway.

Meanwhile, over 3000 Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) and Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), including those carrying passengers are stranded on the highway. It has started snowing on this side of the Jawahar tunnel.

He said stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations once a green signal is received that highway is fit for undertaking journey.

The Traffic official said there was fresh snowfall on historic Mughal road during the past 24 hours. The road is closed for the past ten days due to accumulation of several feet of snow. The snow clearance operation launched by the district authorities was hampered due to fresh snowfall.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed for traffic for the second day on Friday due to fresh snowfall at Meenmarg and Zojila pass and Sonamarg during the past 24 hours.

Hundreds of vehicles, including carrying passengers and trucks loaded with essential for Ladakh region, were stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass.
