| Beig crosses all limits of permissiveness | | PDP shuns all pretentions to come out naked over its communal agenda | | Early Times Special Correspondent Jammu | June 19 News Analysis The agenda of secessionists and Islamic fundamentalists of all hue and colour in Kashmir, including both sections of Hurriyat Conference, JKLF and other outfits, to create Islamic sovereign state of Kashmir was never in doubt and all these outfits had not been making any pretentions about their real motive behind their movement to secede from India. But shedding of all pretentions of secularism and coming out all naked, betraying their stark communalism by the PDP, which is a coalition partner in the state government and which calls itself as the mainstream political party, is a development which should cause a serious concern to all the nationalists and secular minded people in the state and in the country. Instead of taking the bull of communalism propounded by the secessionists and Islamic fundamentalists in Kashmir by horn, the PDP has chosen to surrender before it and even try to excel the out and out Muslim communalists in Kashmir, with eye on the vote bank of the separatists and religious fundamentalists. In the competitive politics with National Conference in wooing the secessionists and religious fundamentalists, the PDP has crossed all limits and stooped much lower than the National Conference. Hardly any margin is left between the Hurriyat Conference and other secessionists and communal outfits in Kashmir on the one hand and the PDP on the other. After giving defeat to the NC in stooping before communalism and spreading the virus of communal hatred, the PDP is now all out to outshine even the hard line Hurriyat Conference and its chief leader Sayed Ali Shah Gelani. By stating that Congress ministers in the cabinet meeting had blackmailed the PDP not to place hurdle in the way of government transferring 800 kanals of forest land to SASB, by threatening to abandon construction of Mughal road, which 'connects Muslim majority areas of Rajouri and Poonch with Muslim majority Kashmir', the Deputy Chief Minister in Azad government, Muzaffar Hussain Beig, representing PDP, has stooped to the lowest level to create communal divide, by projecting PDP as the representative of the Muslims in the state, while Congress represents and stands for Hindus only. The Congress ministers in question have done well to give lie to the allegations made by Beig. Yet their reaction to these machinations of PDP and the Deputy Chief Minister is very mild and only defensive. The J&K Pradesh Congress President, Saif-ud-Din Soz was quick to give rebuff to Beig by stating that by giving such a statement Beig has tried to vitiate the atmosphere into communal divide in the state. But the question arises why Congress is bearing all this nonsense from its coalition partner in the government. After this statement of Beig and its implicit endorsement by the PDP, where is left the scope for the two parties to pull together and govern the state on secular lines? The allegations made by the Deputy Chief Minister are also against the concept of joint responsibility of the cabinet and are tantamount to the lack of confidence in the Chief Minister. Under these circumstances continuance of Beig in the Azad led government is untenable and out and out opportunistic. The Congress too cannot escape the criticism of bearing with the out and out communal agenda of the PDP, as a political expediency, at the cost of great harm to the national interest and the interest of secularism in the state and in the country. After stooping to the low to which PDP has, the only course left for it to bolster its electoral prospects in the coming elections by wooing the secessionists and religious fundamentalists is to take a copy of holy Quran in their hands and seek the votes in the name of Islam and holy Quran, raising the wolf cry of Islam in danger. The other low tactics left for PDP are to hoist Islamic green flag with moon and star on it and put on the photographs of Mohammad Ali Jennah in its offices as well as display cut outs of Jennah during the electioneering. The party leaders had already in the last elections waved green handkerchiefs, to convey an impression of their Islamic character and even taken Pakistani rock salt in one hand and sea salt in other, asking the people for preference for the Pakistani rock salt. What more tactics will pay the PDP to win the elections? Only God knows. |
