If the authorities in the Holland had over reacted in detaining the ten Indians on board from Amsterdam to Mumbai, after taking back the flight to Amsterdam, little after its take off from there and questioning the detainees, suspecting their having links with terrorism, the reaction to the unfortunate incident in India by and large too has not been balanced. The media in particular over reacted to the pre-emptive action taken by the Dutch police, in warding off any likely mishap. Column after column have been contributed by many a learned and well known journalists in the newspapers, besides the electronic media blowing the alleged harassment to the twelve Indians detained and then let off honourably, after no terrorists links were found in their undisciplined behavior in the air craft. Some renowned journalists, using the medium of newspapers over which they have control, even went to the extent of terming the action of Dutch authorities, with sensational headlines as "Apartheid back with vengeance." Some others have drawn the hasty conclusion in expressing apprehension of brown skinned people in Europe and other Western countries, inhabited mostly by whites, to be subject of suspicion in future, thus presenting a gloomy prospects for the Asians in the West. In the back drop of foiled terrorist plot by some Islamic fundamentalists, having their origin in Pakistan and other Islamic countries, the Dutch authorities cannot be blamed for trying to be twice wise, after bitten once in our over reaction to the alleged trauma undergone by the detainees, we have totally ignored the unbecoming behavior of these Indians, which could give rise to suspicion about their intentions of some mischief. Our own reaction to the Mumbai serial metro train blasts are not less panicky and over cautious, leaving nothing to chance. Even in our day to day life, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and North-Eastern States, where terrorism is at the height, our grumbling over frisking, searches and putting up of barricades and bunkers in the cities and towns, under the given situation, is uncalled for. This much price shall have to be paid by the law abiding innocent citizens for their own safety and security at the hands of the merchants of death on prowl and for the security of the country as a whole. In the abnormal times as the present ones our easy goings and comforts enjoyed during the normal times shall have to be somewhat dispense with. Particularly the politicians and bureaucrats at high positions shall have to compromise their ego, which they feel hurt in their frisking by the police and other security agencies on duty. This however does not give license to the police or other security agencies to unnecessarily harass the innocent, to settle their own personal scores or to defend their ego of authority. A fine balance between the restrain and orderly behavior, honouring human sensibilities by the security agencies and sacrifice of their comfortable and unperturbed living by the citizens shall have to be maintained.
