| Will tainted former ministers get congress mandate to contest assembly polls? | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 19 Will the Congress High command field G.A.Mir and Peerzada Mohd.Syed as the party candidates from Dooru and Kokernag constituencies from where they were elected to the Assembly in 2002 election as both of them are allegedly involved in the sex scam ?This is a million dollar question after both the Peerzada and G.A.Mir have started their pre-poll campaign. Constitutional experts said that since G.A.Mir who alongwith 14 others have been allegedly involved in the Srinagar sex scam and the case is pending before the High Court, has neither been convicted nor the charges against him have been confirmed he will not be debarred from contesting the election. As far as Peerzada Mohd.Syed is concerned the charges against him were simply leveled by one MP,Madan Lal Sharma, who had stated that he and the speaker,Tara Chand, too were involved in the sex scam such wild allegations, that too unsubstantiated, cannot debar the Peerzada and Tara Chand from contesting the election. The experts say that the same yardstick can be applied to Raman Mattoo, who had won the 2002 poll from Habba Kadal constituency as an independent candidate. And later he joined the Peoples'Democratic Forum.Raman Mattoo also faces the sex scam case in the court but he has not been convicted.Ghulam Hassan Khan, who had won the 2002 poll from Shopian constituency, had resigned from the party after his name was also linked with sex scam.Since he had not been named by the victims of the scam he was persuaded to rfejoin the PDP which he did. Both Peerzada Mohd.Syed and G.A.Mir are strong candidates in Kokernag and Dooru constituencies respectively. If the congress denied them the party mandate there was indications that the two may contest the ensuing election as independent candidates. |
