Srinagar/Jammu | June 20
Heavy rainfall which lashed region, particularly parts of South Kashmir, since last night has forces suspension of Yatra to Amarnath cave shrine for the day leading to stranding of thousands of pilgrims at the base camp.
Official sources said that the Amarnath yatra was suspended on due to heavy rains near the cave shrine and along the route of the pilgrimage. No fresh batch of pilgrims was allowed to move to the shrine in Anantnag district from Jammu in view of bad weather and heavy rains, official sources said.
The road from Pahalgam to cave and Baltal to cave has become slippery in view of the rain.
Slippery conditions on the two tracks from Baltal and Pahalgam leading to the cave shrine forced authorities to suspend pilgrimage. Thousands of pilgrims were stranded at various places. The vehicles carrying the pilgrims were stopped at various places on the Srinagar-Baltal road because of heavy rains and slippery road conditions. Besides this, heavy rush of devotees at the North Kashmir base camp also forced authorities to stop pilgrimage temporarily.
Pilgrimage on Pahalgam route has also been suspended because of bad weather conditions. No pilgrim was allowed to proceed towards the Valley from Jammu this morning because of heavy rains and slippery road conditions along the Jammu-Srinagar highway.
Authorities have decided to allow pilgrims to proceed towards the cave shrine from Jammu base camp only after the fair weather conditions. We will allow the pilgrims to proceed towards the cave shrine if the weather permits But, we will take a decision only after the fair weather conditions, authorities said here.
No pilgrim vehicle was allowed from Jammu because of the rains and fear of landslides on the highway as it was raining in Jammu and its adjoining areas since last night. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway also witnessed heavy downpour, the only road which pilgrims take to reach the two base camps at Pahalgam and Baltal.
So farm over 65,000 pilgrims had paid obeisance at the cave shrine in the first three days and heavy rush of the pilgrim on the two tracks has also forced authorities to suspend the pilgrimage. Sources informed that both the tracks used by the pilgrims viz Pahalgam and Baltal were slippery and authorities were reluctant to take any risk at this stage.
