| Cong downplays BSP's withdrawal | | | New Delhi | June 21
Congress today downplayed BSP withdrawing support to the UPA government, saying it was "not surprised at the decision and that the reasons given for the move were not sustainable.
"(BSP chief) Mayawati withdrawing support to the UPA government is not a surprise because UPA government is still in a majority," Digvijay Singh, AICC General Secretary and party-in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, told reporters here.
He said reasons like inflation and mistreatment meted out to Uttar Pradesh Government given by her for withdrawing the support were "not sustainable".
Noting that she had "no justification" to say that the UPA has not done enough to control inflation, he claimed that her government has not taken action against hoarders, black marketers and profiteers as suggested by the Centre.
He also alleged that Mayawati has "undone" whatever actions her own administration has taken by withdrawing cases against hoarders and black marketeers.
"As far as inflation is concerned, it is a worldwide phenomenon," Singh said.
On her demand for additional funds for the state, the Congress leader said that Mayawati must realise that whatever funds the UP government has got under UPA regime is "four times more than what it got under the previous NDA government".
"Had she been so serious about getting more money for UP, last two years she should have attended Planning Commission meetings where the decisions are taken," he said.
Asked whether her decision would upset the government's permutation and combination on the nuclear deal, Singh said, "she has not taken back her party's support over the deal."
On cases against Mayawati, he said law has to take its own course. |
