| Pride of region, Akhnoor bridge ‘night threat’ | | | Sumit Sharma Akhnoor | June 22 When second bridge was thrown open on Chenab River in Akhnoor by the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh with an unprecedented fanfare, the Akhnoor residents had a moment of ‘relief’ and ‘rejoice’. Relief for seeing an end to those long hours traffic jams on either side of the bridge and rejoices as the project of national pride had finally become ready for the traffic. Celebrations are over, traffic is making brisk movement on the bridge, but two months after its inauguration some grave concerns still remain. Walking along the bridge or driving across during night hours may be at one’s own risk. The bridge was probably hurriedly decked up for inauguration and the authorities failed to put the flood lights. And it was never cared for ever after. The bridge was constructed by GREF costing Rs 22 crore but it appears that authorities have not spare money to spend on lightening system on bridge. The bridge has curve shape and plying vehicle on the bridge during night time is at one’s own risk. Many a times information about presence of terrorists in the area had been received by the intelligence agencies but authorities even does not bother to depute security forces to guard the bridge. Recently intelligence agencies tapped the voice of militants in which one who was hiding near guest house Talab Tillo was guided by another from the Akhnoor area reveals how safe the bridge is .Various traps had been laid in different areas including Kotbalwal,Talab Tillo, Nagrota and Akhnoor but in spite of this authorities still have been giving deaf ear to portent. When Early Times contacted to MLA Akhnoor Shyam Lal he said that he and MP Madan Lal had written a letter to the authorities in this regard but they were told that that flood lights will not be installed on the bridge due to security point of view. The answer they got forced common man to think that had they come to know about the answer before they would not have dreamt of second Akhnoor bridge. |
