| 136 recruits desert BSF training centre after 'sexual harassment' | | Bihar orders probe | | Early Times Reporter Jammu / Patna | June 22 A group of 136 recruits of Bihar Military Police have deserted a Border Security Force training centre at Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir after one of them was allegedly harassed by an instructor, police sources said on Sunday. However, the BSF, which has filed a missing report with the police, denied the allegation and maintained that the recruits, part of a 370-strong group, had left as they were unable to sustain the tough training course. The trainees alleged that one of the recruits was called by an instructor to his room on June 20 and an attempt to sexually harass him was made, the sources said. When the recruit raised an alarm, his colleagues rushed there and rescued him, they added. The recruits complained to senior BSF officers, the sources said, adding as the authorities allegedly failed to take any action, the 136 recruits deserted the training camp and left for their native places in Bihar. About 370 recruits of the Bihar Military Police had joined two training centres at Udhampur and Jagnoo on June 1 for a 40-week long training course, they said. BSF Deputy Inspector General Asaf Ali, denied the allegation by the trainees and claimed they left as they failed to keep up with the rigours of the course. He said he has constituted a three-member committee headed by a senior officer to look into the allegation. Meanwhile, Bihar government has ordered a probe into alleged sexual exploitation of trainee policemen from the state at the training centre of Border Security Force at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. On receiving complaints that trainee police personnel were subjected to "sexual exploitation" at the BSF training centre, the state police dispatched the Commandant of Patna based Bihar Military Police (6), Ramnarayan Singh, to Udhampur late last night to investigate the allegation, Bihar Director General of Police S C Jha told reporters here. However, the DGP said the allegations levelled by the trainee policemen appeared to be "frivolous" as the training was very tough and the trainees, unable to bear the rigorous training, might have cooked up the story of being sexually exploited at the training centre. "The actual position will be known once the commandant submits his report after making a thorough probe into the allegations," Jha said. Altogether 370 policemen from Bihar were being imparted training at BSF's centre at Udhampur which include those policemen who were appointed earlier but not given any training, the DGP said. |
