Those who stoked fire in Kashmir need to extinguish it

Jammu | June 24
For the last two days Kashmir is on fire. For the last several days peoples' feelings in Jammu are higly ruffled. Unfortunately those, belonging to the political parties or to some social organisations.who could have initiated damage control exercise are seen stoking the flames of hatred, anger, regional and communal tension. On Tuesday more than 70 civilians and some policemen were injured in lathicharge, stone pelting, and firing at various places in Srinagar.Apart from the anger over the transfer of forest land to the Shrine Board the anger and violence were the result of death of one boy Feroze Ahmed in the police firing on unruly mob at Nowhatta yesterday. The entire interior of Srinagar was rocked by violence. And again unfortunately mobs attacked several Government buildings in Ganderbal.A section of the demonstrators, protesting against the land transfer order, blocked the route leading to Baltal. They pelted some buses carrying pilgrims to Amarnath. The authorities swung into action and suspended the paessenger transport services on the route for some hours causing a lot of inconvenience to the pilgrims.
The entire city of Srinagar observed complete hartal. In Jammu there were cries favouring blocking the supply lines to Kashmir.Since every item of consumer use flows from Jammu to Srinagar the threat of blocking the supply line could have alarming impact on the overall situation in the state. And none other than the BJP MLA,Jugal Kishore headed a group of protesters who resorted to a symbolic road block at Nagrota for a couple of hours resulting in the suspension of the passenger traffic.
In Kashmir political leaders and majority of people demand cancellation of the order approving transfer of 800 kanals of forest land to the shrine Board at Baltal.Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, who seems to have been more enraged by the land transfer order than anybody else, has threatened that the PDP will pull out of the Government if the order was not cancelled by June 30.However,he has been advised by the Congress high command the new Governor,N.N.Vohra,not to take any hasty step.Perhaps on his taking over as Governor tomorrow Vohra will have to review the entire situation. Some intellectuals belonging to the Kashmir valley are of the opinion that the Government may not be in a position to cancel the land transfer order at the current jucnture as they believe it could result in Jammu being on fire. They referred to VHP supremo Parveen Bai Togadia's statement and say his utterances are sure to ignite the minds of people in Jammu.
The damage has been done.It is not the time to fix responsibility. It is not the time to identify those who were responsible for placing the state on flames. It is time to extinguish the flames of hatred, communal tension and regional divide. It is not impossible. If those who stoked the fires make a joint appeal. If they fail in doing so time is not far off when the new Governor may be forced by the circumstances to place the state under the Governor's rule by invoking section 92 of the state constitution.Panthers Party leader,Harsh Dev Singh said "this is the time for imposition of Governor's rule."He asked "if the current political flux and breakdown in the law and order machinery cannot be termed as a proper reason for imposing Governor's rule what situation then warrants it?"
Political parties trying to stoke the fires should not sit silent which could create a situation where there will be no other alternative but to impose the central rule. That could be unfair when only less than five months are left for the next election.
