| Political crisis notwithstanding, present arrangement unlikely to be tampered with | | | Srinagar, September 1:-The National Conference leadership’s dream of seeing the PDP out of the ruling coalition is unlikely to frutify in the immediate future despite its verbal assurance to Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, that it would support the Government from outside if the PDP quit the coalition or circumstances warranted its(PDP’s) ouster. Inside reports said that Azad,by not accepting the recommendations of the PDP for divesting Muzaffar Hussain Baig of the portfolios of Finance, Law and Planning, had set the stage for a showdown with the PDP. But soon after Mehbooba Mufti talked, on phone, with the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi the scene was reversed. The reports said that Ms Gandhi’s trusted man, Ahmed Patel, expressed his annoyance over the way Mr Azad handled the situation. According to these reports, Azad has been plainly told to avoid tampering with the current political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir indicating that the AICC leadership was not yet for forging an alliance with the National Conference. However, Azad is yet to adopt reconciliatory postures towards the PDP and by refusing to drop Muzaffar Hussain Baig even after the PDP recalled him from the council of ministers has not closed the doors for a major showdown between the two main coalition partners, the congress and the PDP. One report said that Baig had been suggested to resign from the Assembly seat so that he could continue to be the minister for a period of six months during that period he could seek reelection to the Assembly. And this could be possible if the AICC leadership did not intervene and bring out a rapprochement between Azad and the Muftis. One thing seems to be certain: Baig has burnt his boats after having been recalled from the council of ministers by the PDP leadership. And in the absence of any support from Delhi Mr Azad may not be in a position to keep him in the council of ministers headed by him(Azad). And the Muftis have hit him hard by revoking suspension of Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir on the heels of recall order served to Baig as it is seen that the PDP leadership has preferred Mr to Baig, the two political foes.In fact Mir turned a dissident when he objected to Ms Mehbooba Mufti’s support to Baig when the party candidate was to be recommended to Azad for the post of Deputy Chief Ministership on the ground that he (Mir) was a founder member of the PDP and was much senior politician than Baig. Since Mr Azad was scheduled to return to Srinagar on Saturday from a tw-day tour of Ladakh the political crisis in the state may take yet another couple of days for crystallizing.PDP leaders blame Mr Azad for fuelling the crisis by rejecting the recommendations for the allotment of the portfolios of Muzaffar Hussain Baig explaining that at the time of the formation of the coalition Government an agreement had been reached under which the alliance parties would recommend to the Chief Minister the portfolios their ministers should be allotted. They said Mr Azad has violated this agreement which could indicate that he was interested in sowing the seeds of dissensions in the PDP. |
