| Indigenous low cost technologies imperative for improving rural living standard: Dilawar | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 26 Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mohammad Dilawar Mir today maintained that government is keen on propagating cost effective indigenous rural technologies to the far flung and rural areas of the state for improving the standard of living and maximizing rural employment generation. Speaking after inauguration of two day State level workshop-demonstration on Rural Technology organized in collaboration with IMMT (CSIR) Bhubaneshwar at Krishi Bhawan, Jammu, the minister affirmed the greater need of sensitizing the rural population about the availability and utility of cheap rural technologies aimed at simplifying the lives of ‘aam admi’. Taking keen interest in application of rural technologies, the minister witnessed the physical working of Terafil water filter, Biomass operated multi-purpose drier, paddy thresher, energy efficient stoves etc which were displayed for the general public. He was accompanied by Principal Secretary PHE A.K. Angurana, Director IMMT (CSIR) B.K. Mishra, Senior scientist Mr Kuntia, Chief Engineer PHE Mr Goswamy and senior officers of various departments . Emphasizing on generating greater awareness among people about the availability of technologies displayed in the exhibition, Mr Mir said that such need based technologies not only increase the yield with reduced labour but have an added advantage of being cost effective and energy efficient. He recalled how during his school days concerted campaigning in villages about the use of fertilizers ushered a green revolution in the state and said that similar motivational campaigns to promote such technologies through dedicated field functionaries can lead to rural industrialization and development of cottage industries. Mir said that in our state where nearly 70% population lives in villages which are still deprived of basic facilities like availability of pure drinking water, electricity etc. He said the technologies developed by IMMT Bhubneshwar would give fillip to government’s endeavour of ensuring that minimum basic facilities are provided to every nook and corner of the state. The minister said that in the present times when the country is witnessing steep rise in fuel prices the energy efficient devices like the displayed multi-fuel chulahs, oven and water purifier which depend on locally available sources of fuel like biomass, dried up leaves, wood etc can be the only panacea. He added that these are also eco-friendly and less hazardous to health. Stating that rural technology can help in solving the problem of unemployment that is plaguing the rural youth and leading to large scale migration to cities, the minister asked the officers to explore the possibilities of large scale production of such indigenous technologies using locally available raw materials. This would help in steering the skilled and educated rural youth to set up economically viable self employment ventures. Speaking on the occasion, Senior scientist Mr. Kuntia informed that IMMT is striving tirelessly to develop technologies that cater to common man especially the marginal farmers and small entrepreneurs. He said that quality and need based products are being prepared to benefit the people belonging to lower economic strata. He said IMMT Bhubneshwar has developed more than two dozen indigenous technologies which are both cost effective and simple in working adding that these are becoming popular among the masses with each passing day. Reminding about Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of ‘ decentralization of development’ Principal Secretary PHE Mr Angurana said that use of rural technologies ensure proper harnessing of local resources thereby reaching out the benefits of development to the far off rural areas. He said that judicious use of these technologies can lead to poverty alleviation and generation of employment. |
