| Center watching with caution | | | New Delhi | June 26 The Central Government is closely monitoring the law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of continued agitation by a section of people over transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) by the state government. A high-level meeting was convened here, chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, during which the situation in the state was discussed, official sources said. During the meeting, the officials were informed by security agencies that anti-national and secessionist elements in the valley were instigating people to come out on streets and foment law and order problem, they said. The Home Ministry also asked the state government to take all steps necessary for bringing in peace in the valley, which has seen pitched battle between police and protesters. So far three persons have lost their life in police firing. The protesters have been demanding scrapping of transfer of 39.88 hectares of land to SASB as it would effect not only the environment but also change the demographic nature of the valley. This issue has seen bringing warring Hurriyat Conference factions on a single platform. |
