Congress keen to protect constituency in Jammu
Land transfer row

Jammu | June 27
Which political party will gain and which one will lose from the ongoing controversy over the diversion of forest land to the Amarnath Shrine Board ?This question has assumed significance following breast beating of political activists and people in Jammu and Kashmir, one side demanding withdrawal of the order the other favouring the status quo.
When the controversy over the diversion of 800 kanals of forest land to the shrine Board was raised by the PDP in Kashmir, which was later hijacked by number of other political groups, including the separatists, the PDP has gained from it.The National Conference was quick to follow suit by demanding the Governor to convey to the Government to withdraw the order. As such both these organizations have gained the support of the voters in the valley, the PDP being a greater gainer than the National Conference. However, both these organizations seemed to have suffered losses in the Jammu region where the BJP,VHP and Shiv Sena staged protest demonstrations, and traders and transporters supported the Bandh call on June 26.
Since the Congress remained a fence sitter it had nothing to either lose or gain from the controversy. In the initial stages it played safe. But there are fears that its strong base in the Jammu region may suffer erosion if even on the recommendations of the Governor the land transfer order was canceled.Whatever may be its gains and losses the Congress is very keen to defuse the crisis and its top leaders say "we are not trying to exploit the situation for electoral gains."They say that other parties, particularly the PDP and the NC,were trying to cash on the controversy.
Even if the interests of the congress in Jammu could be jeopardized if the order was withdrawn its losses will depend on the way the BJP,the Panthers Party and other organizations handle the issue.
