As no signs of reconciliation were seen even on the fifth consecutive day of protests against the diversion of land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today had a half an hour long meeting with the Governor NN Vohra in Srinagar to find out some measures for crisis resolution.
Earlier, the Chief Minister also made a televised appeal to the protestors to call off their agitation as he repeatedly assured that no permanent structures are being allowed to come up on the controversial land.
According to a Raj Bhawan spokesman, in their one and a half hour meeting Vohra and Azad they discussed the overall situation in the State. The Chief Minister briefed the Governor about his assessment of various sensitive matters. Both Vohra and Azad reiterated their appeal to the people to maintain calm stressing that there is no issue which cannot be resolved amicably in a peaceful manner, said a Raj Bhawan spokesman.
They also urged all political parties and organisations to help in restoring normalcy and paving the way for resolving all issues, which hurt the sensibilities of all segments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Maintenance of peace is vital in the larger interests of the State. Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed spilling of blood of innocent people in the past two decades", the Governor said and hoped that the sagacious people of Kashmir and Jammu will not get misled by malicious propaganda or swayed by passions.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister in his televised appeal to the people of Jammu and Kashmir said that that there was no issue that could not be resolved peacefully, appealing people to maintain calm and not to pay any heed to elements out to vitiate peace in the State. He said that he had already made it clear that till such time a solution to the issue of diversion of land to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) was found, no construction would be allowed on the land in question. He said he was happy to note that the new Governor, who is also the Chairman of SASB, shared similar views. He said the issue could be resolved by the Government and SASB and there was some headway on this matter.
The Chief Minister described as baseless and unfounded the propaganda by vested interests that buildings would be constructed on the land and non-state subjects settled there. He said there was no such thing happening as Article 370 of the State Constitution did not allow this possibility.
The fact of the matter, the Chief Minister said, was that the Government Order issued for diversion of land to SASB clearly mentions the purpose of the diverted land as “raising pre-fabricated structures only for camping purposes of pilgrims without going in the construction of permanent structures at Baltal and Domail by SASB”. The proprietary status of the forest land shall remain unchanged, the order categorically says.
Appealing people, both in Kashmir and Jammu, to maintain calm and peace, the Chief Minister said that violence had already taken a heavy toll of human lives in the State in the past two decades and it could not afford more spilling of blood.
