| Rafting camp concludes at Akhnoor | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 28 The 3-day rafting camp organized by Directorate of Tourism in collaboration with extreme Himalayan Adventure concluded at Akhnoor. Sixteen youth including two females from Jammu were imparted training in rafting skills, including safety and rescue measures by National level rafter, Raju Raj Jamwal. The objective of the camp was to train participants for National Level Rafting events and also to enable them acquire skills for working as guides to carry forward River Rafting on commercial basis. River Chenab is one of the ten most challenging rivers for river rafting in the world. Different stretches of this river provide ample opportunities for attracting rafting enthusiasts both professional and amateur rafters. The Tourism Department proposes to encourage adventure sports enthusiasts to take up river rafting as a profession and in the first instance provide the facilities for river rafting to tourists/pilgrims visiting Vaishno Davis in the Reasi Dera Baba Banda and Akhnoor areas. This would help in extending their stay at Katra and Jammu city from where these locations on the bank of Chenab River are conveniently accessible. It will also help in creating new employment opportunities thereby contributing to the state’s economy. In the second stage, the Department also proposes to organize rafting events in Kishtwar area where experienced and professional rafters from across the world would be invited to participate. |
