Political scenario changing fast
1/10/2020 9:32:48 PM
Revival of political activities in Jammu and Kashmir is an indication that the Government of India (GoI) has decided to move ahead with new faces.
A team of 15 envoys from different countries that visited J&K met members of civil society and the politicians. The political leaders who met the envoys in Kashmir comprised mostly of the former MLAs of the Peoples Democratic Party, who announced their appearance on the political arena in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir by meeting the Lieutenant Governor Girish Chander Murmu in Jammu.
The same set of the PDP leaders met the envoys and put forth their point of view. Minutes after the politicians met the foreign envoys, the PDP announced their expulsion from the party. The expulsion of the former PDP MLAs has paved the way for new Kashmir based political party to take shape. The party could also comprise of the rebel leaders from National Conference and Congress.
Emerging situation in the Valley is an indication that the road has ended for the traditional Kashmir centric parties. Most of the leaders have deserted the PDP and they are shifting towards the greener pastures. The cracks are wide and open within the National Conference and in coming days these may become public. Recently NC Member Parliament Akbar Lone after attending party's meeting asserted that his party won't contest the elections till pre August 5, 2019 position is restored but there was no mention of it in the official statement of the NC which was released after the meeting concluded. The contradiction was clearly visible.
Slogans which were coined by the NC and PDP in the past have become irrelevant and so have become their formulas of autonomy and self rule. These parties have been left with nothing to sell. Their survival in the new setup looks difficult. Politicians, who have been a part and parcel of these parties for the past so many years, seem to have realized that they have to look for alternatives to keep themselves relevant. And it's no pointing sailing in a boat which has already sunk.
J&K's reorganization has provided an opportunity to the Jammu based parties to put their act together and lead from the front. Delimitation will end the discrimination with the Jammu region and the chances about Union Territory of J&K having a Chief Minister from Jammu are looking bright. Kashmir centric politicians stand cornered. They will need to lot of time to regroup and get reestablished.
