| Locating Central University, IIT in the state | | | | The reports about the state government deciding to set up IIT sanctioned by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development for J&K, in Kashmir valley has caused resentment in Jammu, where people believe that they are always discriminated against by the powers that be in the state and in the Centre. Jammu had the better claim for location of an IIT, because of overall peace and calm prevailing here, valley is still disturbed. Moreover Jammu being at a less distance from other parts of the country and whether here being friendly throughout the year for the students from out side the state. The decision by the Union ministry of Human Resources Development about allotting one IIT out of six new ones to be setup in the country, to Jammu and Kashmir as well as the state being given one Central University either by opening a new one or upgrading one of the existing universities in the state to the level of Central University, is a highly welcomed development. The setting up of an IIT in this state will open a new vista of learning in higher technology and absorb the highly qualified and talented students coming out from the academic institutions, who can in turn prove asset to the state. It will lead to a new revolution in technological advancement in this state, opening new avenues of employment and research in technology. The opening of a Central University in J&K or upgradation of an existing university to the level of Central University will provide impetus to the already growing educational standards in the state. The University of Jammu has already scaled new heights in the academic sphere by opening of many new disciplines and spheres of learning for the scholars. With law and order comparatively much better in Jammu and hence the campus atmosphere being more peaceful and healthy, there is every hope that the university of Jammu will get this honoured status and scale new heights in the field of learning and research in various subjects. But the location of IIT will be a matter of dispute between the two main regions of the state. The Kashmir centric ruling dispensations in the state is always prone to give Kashmir valley the preferential treatment and locate any new venture or institution financed by the centre in Kashmir valley. Jammu, which however has more potential for the development and smooth functioning of these institutions has unfortunately been ignored and not given its due. It is to be seen how the decision making authorities in the state tackle this ticklish problem of locating the IIT, being opened by the centre in this state. While the students desirous to get admission in the IIT to be opened in the state whether those belonging to Jammu region or those coming here for the purpose from other parts of the country will prefer its location in Jammu, on account of atmosphere here being more peaceful and healthy for academic pursuit in technology, there will be a tendency among the Kashmir centric ruling politicians to treat the issue on political concentrations rather than taking into account the comparative healthy environs and convenience of the prospective students. While student from Kashmir seeking admission in the IIT can come to Jammu and stay here for the purpose, the people of Jammu as well as those coming from other parts of the country can ill afford staying put in Kashmir valley, under the present conditions of law and order still disturbed there and militancy still continuing. The decision in this regard needs be taken rationally and dispassionately, taking into consideration the feasibility, rather than on political considerations. |
