| New Jamat Chief formally takes over, supports Geelani's THK on resolution of K-issue | | | Srinagar, September 1: The newly elected Jamat-e-Islami Chief Sheikh Mohd Hassan formally assumed office here today and he was elected for a three year term by an electoral college comprising of house of representatives (Majlis-e-Numaindgan). After assuming office,the new Jamat Chief said that the party is active on religious fronts and has to carry out manifold responsibilities , while as Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Kashmir floated with proper permission of Jamat-e-Islami by Syed Ali Shah Geelani is playing a role in the ongoing struggle for resolution of Kashmir issue. Announcing support to Hurriyat as the constituent group of the separatist amalgam and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Kashmir over the issue of struggle for right to self determination for Jammu and Kashmir State, Sheikh Mohd Hassan said that Geelani has not been expelled from Jamat-e-Islami, but stands suspended from the membership of Majlis-e-Shoora. Threatening punishment to all those who violate Jamat constitution and resort to party indiscipline, he said that efforts are on to bring back estranged party activists and the party is not only holding telephonic discussions with such people, but the issue was debated with Syed Ali Shah Geelani during a condolence meeting recently. Reiterating that Jamat considers Kashmir issue a dispute which needs to be resolved in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of people, he said that Jamat favours a negotiated settlement of long pending Jammu & Kashmir dispute.
