NC ready to support Congress: Farooq
Coalition’s future still uncertain
9/1/2006 9:48:28 PM

Srinagar, Sept 01 : National conference patron and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said that his party is ready to extend its support Congress in case Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would withdraw from the coalition.
Terming the situation arising of the PDP’s dissatisfaction with its senior leader and Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Biag’s as grave; Farooq Abdullah said that his party has always kept its door’s open for Congress. He however, ruled out any patch up with PDP.
Talking to a private Channel, Farooq Abdullah said expressed concern over the crisis befalling the Coalition government. He said the future of Government in Jammu and Kashmir is uncertain.
Talking to the same channel, Tariq Hamid Karra said that t party’s decision to separate Muzaffar Baig from the post of Leader of Legislature party was taken after the high command observed that he was not ‘fulfilling’ his responsibilities. He said the party has the right to remove any of its member from a particular responsibility and no one from outside could interfere in tits internal matters.
The crisis hit the coalition yester day when Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad refused to PDP sought the shifting of Beig from the key portfolios of finance and law.
Reacting to which upset PDP patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed summoned a legislature party meeting, which adopted a resolution removing Beig from the leadership of the legislature party. The PDP also demanded Beig’s ouster from the cabinet.
Meanwhile Congress today washes its hands off the controversy arising out of the demand for the sacking of Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beig by PDP and said that the coalition's nomination of a new deputy CM would be accepted... Congress Spokesman Abheshiek Manu Singhivi in Delhi ruled out any threat to the stability of the Kashmir government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad. He however, denied any comment on Farooq Abdullah’s offer of extending support to the Government.
NC president Omar Abdullah, however, refused to divulge his party’s strategy.
‘We are at the moment watching the situation very closely. I cannot make any comment at present as to what course my party would adopt if the present ruling alliance were to collapse,’ he said.
However, political observers here say that if the Congress-DPD alliance reaches a point of no return, the NC would be more than willing to support Azad’s government from outside.
‘It is clear that Azad can comfortably continue as chief minister with the outside support from the NC. But, can the Congress afford to change horse’s midway? What signal would they be sending out by aligning with the PDP today and with the NC tomorrow? I don’t think it is going to be that simple,’ said a political analyst here. (
