| Options: Between Splits or Splinters | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 30 With Governor NN Vohra setting the July 7 as deadline for the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to prove his majority on floor of the House, hectic activity has got in motion to arrange the requisite numbers. In view of National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party categorically refusing to support the government, the Chief Minister's claim of having required numbers has left the observers guessing. There are very calculated numbers and Azad obviously has to walk on tight rope to manage 44 members to support his government on floor of the House. Political observers are keenly watching Azad's moves and guessing his options as deadline sets in motion. In the prevailing circumstances Azad has following options which can be summed up as gathering the splinter groups or engineering split in the parties. OPTION 1: Congress has 21 elected members and eight associate members. Put together its confirmed tally is 29. Azad can woo in four members of Bhim Singh's Panthers Party, two members of CPI(M) and seven independent legislators. This enhances his tally to 41. Peoples Democratic Party has two suspended members and one rebel. If Azad manages these three to either stand by him or abstain from voting he can easily sail through the trust vote. OPTION 2: To manage the National Conference to support the government from out side. While National Conference ruled out becoming a part of government there is no statement from any leader on possibility of outside support. Even if the National Conference refused to extend the outside support by standing in favour of Azad government on floor of House, the party can abstain allowing the government in minority. OPTION 3: There is no third option other than two above except engineering a split in National Conference or the Peoples Democratic Party or both. NC and PDP have several dissidents. A cabinet berth immediately after Trust vote and party ticket in the forthcoming assembly elections can woo some of them as they have often been seen standing in revolt against the party leadership. However, sources say that Azad will try to find out a solution out of first two options. |
