| From frying pan to fire: Jammu burns in Kashmir's fire | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | June 30 •Land ghost lands J&K in seething trouble •PDP office attacked, Mangat's residence stoned •Shut down, protests in three districts •Strike extended for three days if land not restores A day after the Governor and Chief Minister almost declared resolution of the crisis emerging out the transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, the problem today further escalated and spread across Jammu region with violent protests and demonstrations. After successful shut down of the day, the parties opposed to the decision of the Governor on surrender of Shrine Board land have extended the call for another 72 hours. If no political development takes place to resolve the issue, Jammu City and many other parts of the region are likely to remain tense for next three days. The protestors said that the strike shall not be called off unless the Governor rescinds his order and restores land to the Shrine Board. They also took exception to the Governor's decision of handing over the yatra affairs to the government and described it as a blatant attack on the Hindu sentiments. On a call extended by BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and supported by many other smaller parties at least four districts of Jammu division observed including Jammu city observed a complete shut down while protests and demonstrations were held in other parts of region also. Today's protest, second in a wee, was also joined by the women and elders in many parts of the city. Amidst heavy Police arrangements, protestors spilled over roads across the length and breadth of the city raising slogans against the Governor NN Vohra, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, opposition leader Omar Abdullah and Jammu based Congress leaders. The agitated protestors also attempted to attack the office of Peoples Democratic Party in Gandhi Nagar. A heavy contingent of Police was already guarding the PDP office when protestors reached there. As security forces had sensed trouble, huge barricades had already been laid around PDP office. However, the agitated protestors clashed with the Police and were able to done some vandalism. Protestors also stoned the residence of senior Congress leader and Health Minister Mangat Ram Sharma. Security forces had not anticipated attack on Mangat's residence which gave the protestors enough opportunity to throw stones at the residence of Health Minister. Shops and business establishments remained closed and transport was off the road in the city as bandh supporters held protest marches shouting slogans and burning effigies of Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and estranged coalition partner PDP's patron Mufti Mohammad Syed. Police cane charged BJP, VHP and Shiv Sena demonstrators at Vikram Chowk when they tried to put up a road block, official sources said. The protestors demanded removal of Board chairman and Governor Vohra after the decision by the Board to give up claim on 40 hectares of forest land allotted to it in Anantnag district. Security has been beefed up and additional para military forces deployed in sensitive areas of the city to foil designs of "anti-social elements", the sources said, adding mobile patrolling has also been intensified. |
