| Azad faces uphill task ahead of show of strength | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | July 1 After the Governor, N.N.Vohra,communicated to the Chief Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azd,that he should prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly by July 7 he has left only once choice for Azad.According to constitutionl experts Azad has to demonstrate support of at least 45 MLAs as the total strength of the House is 89 including two nominated members. Since the Governor has preferred to follow parliamentary conventions he did not ask Azad to parade MLAs supporting him in the Raj Bhawan.Azad could have easily sailed through had someone moved a motion of no confidence against him.In that case Azad had to show the support of the majority of MLAs present on the day of trial. Now that he has been asked to prove his majority in the House he has to demonstrate the support of 45 MLAs. However, he seems to be confident as he has received assurance from several independent MLAs and those belonging to the PDP.Experts say that during the process of proving the majority if some MLAs,not supporting him, remain absent the motion will have to be put to vote only when all the 89 members are present. Once the controversial land diversion order was revoked the NC,which 24 MLAs,may openly support the Azad led Government. If such course does not materialise Azad and his supporters have to do a lot of PR work for winning the support of those MLAs who are fence sitters. |
