| Pilgrim dies on way to Amarnath cave, toll climbs to 30 | | | Srinagar | July 1 A 67-year-old Amarnath pilgrim died on his way to the cave shrine, taking the death toll during the ongoing annual pilgrimage to 30, official sources said. Goel Prasad Choudhary, a resident of Ahmadabad in Gujarat, died of natural cause at Panjtarni on 46-km traditional Pahalgam cave route in Anantnag district this morning, they said. A policeman was killed earlier when he fell from a hill while on duty at the Pisu top. The sources said the yatra was going on smoothly with nearly 5,000 pilgrims leaving the base camps of Nunwan and Baltal for cave this morning. While 3,670 pilgrims were allowed from Nunwan on Pahalgam route, another batch of 1,310 pilgrims proceeded towards the cave from Baltal base camp on the shortest 12-km route to the cave. Over 3.82 lakh pilgrims had visited the cave shrine, housing the naturally formed ice-shivlingam, till last evening since the yatra began on June 17, the sources said. |
