PDP leaders indecisive
1/22/2020 10:05:34 PM
A few leaders, who are still left with the Peoples Democratic Party, are caught between the devil and the deep sea. Their former president Mehbooba Mufti, who has been under detention for the past five months, is reportedly believed to have taken a "tough stand" and chances of her being released look bleak. On the other hand senior PDP leaders have reportedly told the party cadre that if their party has to survive on the political arena then they should start seeking restoration of J&K's statehood and forget the past. Prior to August 5, 2019, PDP president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, had threatened "if Centre revokes J&K's special status, entire State would burn and no one will be left in J&K to hold the tricolor." One of the senior PDP leaders during a press conference in Jammu had said that the provocative statements issued by the former J&K chief minister could be one of the reasons for Kashmir based leaders being put under detention. The PDP has been on the crossroads since the day BJP pulled out from the government led by it in Jammu and Kashmir in June 2018. Since that day the PDP has been in tatters. Most of the leaders who had joined the party for the sake of power have said goodbye to it. The ones who are still with the party seem to be indecisive about their future as they are still trying to figure out about whom to follow. The PDP members who are trying to keep the party intact seem to have nowhere to go. If they decide to carry on with their association with the PDP they will have to follow what they are being told i.e. to seek restoration of J&K's statehood. The question is will they change their stand?
Interestingly, Mehbooba Mufti's daughter Iltija Mufti, who has been handling her mother's twitter account, has been silent for the past many days. Either she has realized that making noise is not going to help her mother's cause or she may have been told that times have changed and throwing tantrums are not going to bring Article 370 back. Both National Conference and PDP, which dominated the political discourse in Jammu and Kashmir for the past so many decades, have no idea about how to save their political future. Both these parties have been left with limited options.
