Jammu on fire, BJP activists, SP among 75 injured, curfew clamped
City Tense: Hundreds of vehicles, public property smashed, NH blocked for several hours

As the focus of a sensitive religious-political controversy fully shifts to Jammu region, the winter capital city and many other areas today witnessed violent protests from agitated locals against decision of the Governor to handover Shri Amarnath Yatra to the state government. Thousands of agitators bought pitched battles with the Police in which more than 75 persons were injured including SP Jammu (North) and many other cops.
The protests turned aggressive and vicious in many areas forcing the authorities to clamp curfew under jurisdiction of three city Police stations even as curfew like situation prevailed in entire city and its peripheral areas. However, defying curfew, the agitated activists of BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and many other organized went on rampage across the town smashing public property worth lakhs of rupees.
Shops and other business establishments remained closed for the day during the continuous shut down since Monday while educational institutions remained closed the government offices too were almost empty with no employees able to reach the destination. Similar reports have been received from other parts of the region particularly Samba, RS Pura, Kathua, Akhnoor, Udhampur and Rajouri. Routine life remained crippled across the region as transport kept off the roads.
After protests turned violent and three persons were injured in Police firing, the curfew was clamped in the afternoon in sensitive areas falling under three police stations of Bakshi Nagar, Janipur and Nowabad to contain protestors immediately after cabinet withdrew the land transfer order allotting nearly 40 hectares of land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). Section 144 of CrPC (prohibiting processions and public gatherings) was imposed in other areas of the city where curfew was not imposed.
Inspector General of Jammu Police K Rajendra described the situation as tense but under control. District Magistrate Jammu MS Sheikh said, "we have imposed section 144 CrPC banning processions in Jammu in the light of the situation in the region”. He said situation will be closely monitored to review the curfew order.
Meanwhile, large number of violent protest rocked several places in and around Jammu in which over 50 people were injured.Three BJP workers were injured in police firing in Muthi area on Tuesday while two police men were beaten by angry protestors after they caught hold of them. Angry mob also torched police post in Jatwal area in Samba and blocked traffic on the Jammu Pathankot highway.
A senior police officer Superintendent Police (North) was injured in incidents of stone pelting along with large number of policemen. Police also fired teargas shells in Rehari area to disperse the mob. Reports of cane charge were received from Kaluchak ,BriJ Nagar and other areas in and around Jammu. BJP workers in the other districts falling under Jammu province also organised protests and the areas witnessed complete shut down.
The situation on the Jammu Akhnoor road went out of hands when police party resorted to cane charge to disperse the mob of BJP workers demonstrating in the middle of the road. This was followed by opening of fire in which three youths identified as Ramesh Chander,Chunni Lal and Vikran Jeet Sharma were injured .The angry mob caught hold of the two policemen and thrashed them. .
According to police spokesman three agitators received bullet injuries and were rushed to the Government Medical college hospital. Large number of youth activists of Bharatia Janta Party,Vishwa Hindu Parishad,Bajrang Dal,Kranti Dal and Shiv Sena and others organsied protests on the main city roads at several places in Jammu and fought pitched battles with police to show their anger.Since early morning these activists have blocked movement of traffic across Jammu.
Normal life has been crippled badly due to disruption of traffic and blockades on the Jammu Pathankot and Jammu Srinagar National Highway.Traffic has been disrupted on several other routes by agitators demanding sacking og Kashmir Governor NN Vohra and dismissal of Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Large number of migrants and locals blocked the Jammu-Poonch highway and burnt effigies of State Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad and PDP Patron Mufti Sayeed at Muthi area of the city.Senior police officials have also appealed to the people to maintain calm and peace and not disturb the communal harmony in the region.
