| Government sounds Flood alert in J&K | | Jehlum, Chinab, Tawi flowing above danger mark | | Jammu, Sept.02 Jammu and Kashmir government has sounded a high alert in Jammu and Kashmir as the Jehlum and Chenab Rivers are flowing above danger mark following constant rains in the state. Official sources said that the continuous rains across the state have resulted in flash floods in some of the Nallah’s situated in the upper reaches of the Kathua, Doda and Rajouri districts. However there was no report of any causality or loss of property. River Chenab has also crossed the danger mark and there is a threat of floods in Akhnoor, a spokesman of public health engineering, irrigation and flood control department said in Jammu. Minister of state for PHE, Irrigation and flood control Dr. Romesh Lal who visited some areas some villages in Akhnoor, told News Agency of Kashmir “We have asked the officials in the area to maintain a close vigil on the water level so that precautionary measures, if needed, can be taken”, “The department was ready to face any situation if the water level of chinab increases further” he said adding “we have sought assistance of Army and Police also if required to tackle the situation”. Chief engineer Flood Control and irrigation V K Abrol told News Agency of Kashmir that the water level in Chinab River was flowing above danger mark and it is likely to increase further in case the rains continue. The water level of Chinab River at Akhnoor crossed the danger mark of 35 feet this morning, he said. He said that there was grave threat to some areas of Akhnoor like Indri, Bakora, Nursinghpura, Hamirpur and Gujral, and the people have been advised to remain indoors. It was also learnt that there was immediate threat of flood in chinab and Tawi Rivers as the water was flowing above the danger mark. According the flood control department the water level of chinab could go high if the rains continue. “During the monsoon it is the Nallah’s which causes more threat than the rivers, who’s water level normally increases due to the melting of glaciers Meanwhile, Flood alert was also sounded in the entire Valley in wake of constant rise in the river Jehlum and its tributaries following unrelenting rains that has been lashing the region for the last two days. Official sources declared alert following Jehlum and all its tributaries crossed danger mark. The water level of Jehlum River at upstream Sangam, 40 kms from Srinagar in Anantnag district, crossed the danger mark of 21 feet this morning, a spokesman of the Flood Control Department said here. He said at 10 am the water level of the river at Sangam was 26.45 feet - 5.45 feet above danger mark. Normally alert is sounded when the water level crosses 18 feet and flood is declared when the water level crosses 21 feet, he said. The water level at downstream Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar was 15.90 feet, the spokesman said adding an alert is sounded when the water level crosses 16 feet. However at Asham, 30 kms from Baramulla district, the water level was five feet below normal. Many areas of Pulwama and Anantnag district have inundated and government has started rescuing people to safer places. Sources said that the residents of Gund Kalam in kulgam, who were trapped due to flood in River Vashav, deputy commissioner Anantnag who visited the area assures all help to the residents of Gund. Terming the situation as alarming, the spokesman said authorities have geared up to deal with the challenge and the staff has been asked to maintain a close watch on the situation. |
