| Passenger fares raised by 14 pc, officially | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | July 3 Twenty days after reaching an agreement with transporters, Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday ordered a 14 per cent increase in passenger fares with immediate effect. A notification to this effect was issued by the transport department, Transport Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen said addressing a high level meeting of officers here on Thursday. The agreement between the government and the transporters was announced on June 13 after which the transporters called off their four-day strike in the state. Yaseen directed the officers of the transport department for strict implementation of new passenger rates and ensure that drivers or cleaners do not charge excess rates from the commuters. He warned that the license of drivers and cleaners would be cancelled if found overcharging and also asked for intensifying the checking system so that menace of overloading was controlled. The minister said the vacant posts in the transport department would be filled under fast track system. Measures to minimise the traffic accidents across the state were also discussed at the meeting, an official spokesman said adding other issues pertaining to regulations of traffic across the state and on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway keeping in view the rush of tourists and pilgrims were also discussed. |
