| Mehbooba lashes out at NC, says it is devil quoting scriptures | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | July 3 People's Democratic Party has said it does not require lessons in political conduct from a party like National Conference. In response to a statement by some leaders of the National Conference, a spokesman of PDP after a meeting of senior leaders convened by Party President Mehbooba Mufti said here today that NC's sermons to PDP were in the nature of "devil quoting scriptures". The spokesman said the National Conference was upset over the Party President Mehbooba Mufti's criticism of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for obvious reasons. "After all the National Conference had kept itself available as a stepny for the last so many years in the hope of a break-down of coalition and filling up the slot" he said and added that the National Conference was now finding it impossible to get the crumbs of power in view of the serious situation that Mr Azad had landed the State into. After having waited for long in the hope of getting into power through backdoor, NC's hopes have now dashed but not before its President Omar Abdullah conceded that Mr Azad had the required numbers to pass the floor test. He and the legislature Party Leader A.bdul Rahim Rather even met Mr Azad before the crucial party meet in the hope of striking a deal. However, some conscientious party stalwarts had blocked attempts of the party President and its Patron Dr Farooq Abdullah to bail out Mr Azad. "How long this resistance lasts is anybody's guess", the spokesman said. Referring to the role of National Conference in the entire controversy around land for Amarnath Shrine Board, the spokesman recalled that it was the National Conference which had passed the legislation giving the Board sweeping powers which the former Governor Lt. Gen. S.K Sinha found handy to carry forward his Sangh Parivar agenda. This was done in the year 2002 when National Conference was a coalition partner of the BJP whose nominee the former Governor Gen Sinha was. Now, the spokesman said, Sinha was still trying to fish in the troubled waters of the State to create sympathies for the NC throughout the country. Gen Sinha, he said, bore a grudge against PDP and its Party Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for his resistance to the Governor's moves between 2003 and 2005. During that period, the spokesman recalled National Conference was in the forefront to shoot down the Counsel of Sanity and caution provided by the Chief Minister. The spokesman said National Conference was hand in glove with BJP even now and its candidate recently became Deputy Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation only as a result of the alliance between the two. Otherwise, the National Conference has just six councilors in the Jammu Municipal Corporation. The spokesman said it was ridiculously pathetic for the National Conference stalwarts to try to create an impression that PDP was still in race for power. "We have given up power when we thought we must in the interest of people whom we represent" he said and added that National Conference had not even protested against Gujarat riots when its President was a minister in the NDA government. Mr. L.K Advani's disclosures in his book are the too recent to require a mention as to how Dr. Farooq Abdullah had bartered away his autonomy proposal for a junior minister ship for his son. The spokesman said PDP's stand on the present government is well known to need a reiteration. "We will act in accordance with the overwhelming opinion of the people of the State who irrespective of caste, colour or religion are now up against Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad". He said the PDP will never compromise on the interest of people even though it had a smaller number of party MLAs compared to the 60 strong legislature party that Dr. Farooq Abdullah commanded and sold out to Sangh Parivar for his personal comfort. It was stated in the meeting that the PDP is united like a rock behind the Party leadership and that it would use its entire numerical strength in the Assembly to rid the State of the present untenable administrative setup. The party viewed with concern the attempts to communalize the situation especially in Jammu city where the NC was still an alliance partner of the Sangh Parivar in the Municipal Corporation. Hope was expressed in the meeting that saver counsel would prevail and the concerns expressed in Kashmir over the land transfer were taken in the right spirit. Kashmiris, the party reiterated have always been tolerant and secular and the ever increasing rush of Amarnath yatris was quantifiable evidence, not withstanding NC President Omer Abdullah's trade against Kashmiri Muslims for having driven out Pandits as he clearly stated in his blog and reported by PTI, May 15, 2008. |
