| Free ration announced for affected people in water submerged areas | | | SRINAGAR,SEPTEMBER 02 Government have taken all possible measures to meet any eventuality arising out of flood situation due to continuous down pour since last two days. While about 64 dewatering pumps have been passed into service to remove water from low-lying areas, about 1.10 lakh sand filled gunny bags have been kept readily available to plug any breach in the embankments of various rivers and flood channels. Army, Fire and Emergency Services have also been asked to supplement flood control measures taken up by the government. This was stated at an emergency meeting held here today to take stock of the flood situation in the valley. The Minister for Irrigation, Flood Control, PHE and Horticulture, Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir presided. Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr. Basharat Ahmed, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Mr. Lateef Zaman Deva, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Reyaz Ahmed Kandi, Chief Engineer PHE Mr. A. R. Baig, DIG Police, Kashmir Mr. Farooq Ahmed, concerned engineers and field officers were also present in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister asked the concerned engineers to gear up men and machinery in all the flood prone areas so that life and property of the people is protected from flood disasters. He directed to keep mobile dewatering pump sets available which could be pressed into service at the time of emergency. He also called for drafting long term and perspective flood control planning in the state. The Minister also asked the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir to immediately provide free-ration to the flood affected people in water-submerged areas. He said field agencies should be geared up to evacuate people from the water logged areas to safer places adding the government school building should be used for the purpose. He directed the concerned officers to keep the people aware about flood situation through print and electronic media regularly. The Minister also inspected some areas near Charsoo in Anantnag which are marooned in flood water and took stock of the situation. Later, the Minister accompanied by the Chief Secretary, Mr. C. Phonsog and Director General of Police, Mr. Gopal Sharma went to the central Flood Control Room in Batamaloo Srinagar to keep close watch on current flood situation.
